CV (curriculum vitae)

Definition

A CV (curriculum vitae) is a document summarising a candidate's work history, education and skills. It is called a resume in the US.

A UK CV usually runs to two pages and lists roles in reverse chronological order, with dates, responsibilities and achievements, followed by education, qualifications and sometimes a short personal profile. Formats vary widely: a graduate's CV may lead with education and projects, while an experienced engineer's may open with a skills summary. Photos, date of birth and marital status are generally left off in the UK.

The CV remains the starting point for most screening, but it is a self-reported document that rewards confident writing as much as relevant experience. Reviewers get more from it when they read against the role's must-haves rather than overall polish, record why each candidate was or was not taken forward and confirm key claims later through interviews and checks.
