Job requisition

Definition

A job requisition is an internal request to open and fund a new or replacement role, usually approved before recruiting starts.

A requisition normally records the job title, department, hiring manager, budget or salary band, headcount, whether the role is new or a backfill, and a target start date. It moves through an approval chain, often finance and senior leadership, before the role is opened. Once approved, it usually becomes the record in the applicant tracking system that adverts, candidates and reports are attached to.

Starting recruitment before a requisition is approved risks interviewing people for a role that is later frozen or changed, which is a poor experience for candidates and wastes interviewer time. Clear requisitions also make reporting easier, since time to fill and cost per hire are normally measured from the approval date. A short intake meeting at this point helps agree screening criteria early.
