A ranked shortlist lists candidates from highest to lowest score against the role's criteria, and for each person shows the evidence behind the score, such as relevant experience from the CV or specific answers from a screening interview. A recruiter can see not just that one candidate scored 82 and another 74, but which criteria made the difference, and can open the source material to check it.
Ranking helps recruiters focus limited time where it is most likely to pay off, especially when a role attracts hundreds of applicants. The evidence is what makes it useful, because a score without reasons cannot be checked or challenged. Recruiters should still review candidates near the cut-off, allow for context the criteria cannot capture and make every progression decision themselves.
