Frontline hiring

Definition

Frontline hiring is recruiting for customer-facing and operational roles, such as store, warehouse, contact-centre and hospitality staff. It is high volume, high turnover and speed-sensitive.

Frontline roles include retail assistants, warehouse operatives, delivery drivers, care workers, contact-centre agents and hospitality staff. Applicants often apply from a phone, may be talking to several employers at once and expect to hear back within days. Requirements tend to focus on availability, location, right to work and practical skills such as customer handling, rather than long employment histories or formal qualifications.

Because frontline candidates often take the first reasonable offer, slow screening directly costs hires, and high turnover means the same roles are filled again and again. Short mobile-friendly applications, quick contact, a few consistent questions on availability and job skills, and clear next steps work well. Keeping a recruiter or store manager in charge of decisions stops speed from coming at the cost of fairness.
