Video interview

Definition

A video interview is an interview over video, either live or recorded in advance by the candidate.

Live video interviews work like a face-to-face meeting held over a video call, with the interviewer and candidate talking in real time. Recorded ones, also called one-way or asynchronous interviews, show the candidate a set of questions and ask them to record answers within a time limit. Recorded formats let large numbers of candidates answer the same questions on their own schedule.

Video removes travel and makes scheduling easier, but it brings its own risks. Lighting, bandwidth, home backgrounds and camera confidence can sway impressions without saying anything about ability. Giving everyone the same questions, scoring the content of answers to a rubric, offering a practice question and providing an alternative format for people who need adjustments all help keep video interviews fair.
