Asynchronous interview

Definition

An asynchronous interview is an interview the candidate completes on their own schedule, such as recorded video answers or an AI voice call, with no live recruiter present.

In an asynchronous interview the questions are set in advance and the candidate answers them when convenient, often within a deadline of a few days. Formats include one-way video, where a candidate records answers to prompts on screen, and AI voice or chat interviews, which can also ask follow-ups. Recruiters review the recordings or transcripts later, usually in less time than a live call would take.

Removing the need to find a shared time slot is the main advantage, especially for candidates on shifts or in other time zones, and for teams screening hundreds of people. The trade-off is less two-way conversation, so candidates should be told clearly what to expect and given a way to ask questions. Consistent questions and a shared scoring rubric keep reviews fair across everyone who takes part.
